Ethical Tech and Worker Rights: Challenging Platform Capitalism
ELLAK Cyprus, as an organization committed to freedom-respecting software and the ethical development of technology, listens closely to the concerns of workers in the tech sector. We respond with concern and solidarity to the threats by Wolt recruiters against striking riders in Cyprus, who are demanding fair pay, transparency, and respect. This incident is a stark example of how platform capitalism exploits workers through algorithmic control, precarious employment, and threats of dismissal for collective action.

A Systemic Issue
The Wolt strike is not an isolated event. It is part of a global pattern where digital platforms, such as Wolt,  Uber, Foody, Bolt and others, use algorithms, opaque contracts, and precarious employment to extract value from workers while denying them basic rights. This model prioritizes profit over people, undermining the principles of openness, accountability, and human dignity that ELLAK Cyprus upholds.

Our Stance
While our primary focus is on promoting open and ethical software, we recognize that the conditions under which technology is developed and deployed –including labor rights, accountability, and worker empowerment– are deeply connected to the principles we champion. We stand in solidarity with the striking Wolt riders and all gig workers fighting for fair treatment and respect.

A Call for Dialogue and Change
We invite all stakeholders, workers, employers, unions, and policymakers, to engage in dialogue and action to create a tech sector that values people as much as it values innovation. This includes
– Supporting gig workers who demand fair pay and transparency.
– Advocating for regulations that protect workers from algorithmic exploitation and precarious conditions.
– Promoting ethical alternatives to platform capitalism, rooted in openness, democracy, and respect for labor rights.
